Mendes 78-B. A reprint of a work first published by George Cannon at London in 1827, but the present edition probably a piracy of a Dutch edition published by Brancart in 1892.

The 1892 edition was "printed in Holland or Belgium for Brancart in Amsterdam and, possibly, the Avery-Smithers group in London."

Résumé / Summary : Reprint of the "enlarged edition" dated 1892.

"ADVERTISEMENT. The original edition of the Spirit of Flagellation, appears, by the costume of the prints, to have been published about the year 1890, but whether by Holland or Aicken I cannot pretend to say.

I have altered the size from 8 vo. to 12 mo., as being more convenient for the diminished pockets of the present day, and have added, by way of appendix the ensuing anecdotes, furnished me by an amateur of birch discipline. I flatter myself that the votaries of this fascinating letch will smile propitiously on my humble endeavours. As most of the works on this subject are out of print, and extremely rare, it is my intention to replace them, in quick succession, in a series of volumes uniform with the present.

Gentlemen requiring Governess , or ladies desirous of being initiated into this branch of the Eleusinian Mysteries , may be confidentially furnished with the necessary information by communicating with me, through the medium of the booksellers, or other agents who may supply them with this work.

Mary Wilson.

1st May, 1892."
